expanding horizons
Usually Jan-March is a slow time for shows. It’s cold, there’s no urgency for people to come out to buy (like the holiday season), and who wants to trudge out in the cold for crafts? Not many people
So I decided to expand my horizons a bit and look elsewhere for opportunity. For those who are unfamiliar with my business, my soaps have a pulp horror comic theme and I was always entertaining the possibility of doing a comic book fair. Luckily I got the opportunity to do a smaller one in NYC yesterday to test out the waters and see if I would do well.
My expectations were exceedingly low for this show, I was going to be happy with just making back my costs. Well, I did make back my costs (including the last minute car service i took thanks to the weather) and a teeny bit more. I also finally got my taste of the comic-con and, more importantly, soaps at a comic-con.
I would probably do it again if the fee was low and the travel was negligible. It was fun to see how much of a novelty soap can be. People would literally stop and stare as they tried to comprehend soap at a comic-con. It was really amusing. The crowd was really, freakishly, surprisingly nice. All in all it was a good time and Im glad to have gotten the opportunity to try it out.
So for those bored in these slow months, try to look out past the craft show scene..you might find a chance to be something fresh in a completely different scene!
